Math Placement

NOTICE: ALEKS will be available for continuing students enrolling in Summer 2024 and Fall 2024 courses from March 8, 2024, until April 26, 2024. NEW INCOMING STUDENTS - Fall 2024: ALEKS will be available from May 15, 2024, until August 25, 2024. First year students must complete ALEKS by June 12th - check your RTUM checklist for details.

Incoming New Students:

  • If you were admitted with an SAT/ACT test, your score may be used for math placement.
    • Option: If a higher-level math placement is desired, you can opt to take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment for consideration.
  • If you have an approved AP Calculus score of 3 or 4, your result may be used for math placement.
    • Option: If a higher-level math placement is desired, you can opt to take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment for consideration.
  • If you were admitted without an SAT/ACT test or if you attended high school outside of the United States, you must complete the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment to determine the appropriate math course for you.

Transfer Students and Students with Dual Enrollment Credit

Transfer students who have not earned college credit in a mathematics course, MUST take ALEKS to determine their math placement.

Students who have completed a math course for college credit must submit the course for evaluation.  Please visit this page for more information.


Math Course Placement and Equivalency Guide

The recommended course will depend on a student's major and degree program. Please see the Math Placement Guide (Domestic Student) for the course in which you are able to enroll.

Below is a list of Credit Equivalencies for Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate examinations. These guidelines are subject to change at any point in time.

(taken in 2021 or later)

Students with AP Credit in both Calculus I and Calculus II (5 on Calculus BC assessment) may enroll in MTH 210 (Introduction to Linear Algebra) or MTH 211 (Calculus III) or certain other more-advanced courses. Continuing Students

ALEKS is intended only for initial math placement. Students may not take ALEKS to skip out of any math course after they have begun a math sequence.

Continuing students who did not take ALEKS in their first semester and have not taken any math courses at UM or any other college or university, may take ALEKS to determine their initial math placement.
